Storage Tips

  1. Inspect a prospective storage unit before signing the contract to assure yourself that the unit is adequate for the intended use.
  2. Always use a high quality case-hardened lock to secure your unit. They are for sale at the office.
  3. When you pack your storage unit, create a center aisle for access to all items.
  4. Leave a small space between the goods stored and the storage unit’s walls. Do not lean items against the walls of the storage unit.  Do not place boxes directly on concrete floors.  Pallets or skids allow air to flow around and under items.
  5. Do not stack heavy or folded objects where they could shift or collapse when you move or need access.   Make sure fragile boxes are placed on top of heavier, less delicate boxes.
  6. Store items you’ll need most often at the front of the unit.
  7. Store more valuable items towards the back of the unit.
  8. Keep out-of-season clothes accessible; your belongings may stay in storage longer than anticipated.
  9. Mattresses should be covered and elevated off of the floor. Use pallets, 2×4’s, plywood or anything else that will keep your items off the floor of the storage unit.
  10. Whenever possible, place dressers and tables top-to-top to save space.
  11. Appliances: wedge doors open while keeping appliances in storage.
  12. You should periodically inspect the goods in your unit.  If you cannot do it yourself because you are out of town, ask a friend or relative to inspect your unit.  Stacked boxes can be heavy they may compress on to boxes below.  Dust can accumulate.  You alone are responsible for your goods in storage.
